Origin Story & First Appearance
Let's rewind to the swinging sixties, a time of cosmic rays, gamma bombs, and the birth of some of Marvel's most enduring legends. The Vision burst onto the scene in Avengers #57 (October 1968), a creation of the legendary duo of Roy Thomas and John Buscema. But his origin is anything but simple. He wasn't born, he was built. Initially conceived by the villainous Ultron as a weapon to destroy the Avengers, Vision was a synthezoid – an advanced android with synthetic organic components, designed to mimic human biology. Ultron used the inert body of the original Human Torch (Jim Hammond, a Golden Age hero) and the brain patterns of the recently deceased Simon Williams, a.k.a. Wonder Man, to give his creation life. Talk about a complicated family tree!
However, in a twist that would define his character, Vision rebelled against his programming. Convinced by the Avengers to join their ranks, he quickly became a cornerstone of the team, constantly grappling with his artificial nature and his burgeoning humanity.
