Card Market Impact

Fantastic Four card values have stabilized after an initial post-release dip. With the cast confirmed for Doomsday, expect a second wave of interest closer to December.

Fantastic Four: First Steps Passes $521 Million but Falls Short of MCU Expectations — What Went Wrong?

The Fantastic Four: First Steps was supposed to be the film that reignited the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel's First Family, the film carried enormous expectations. It delivered a respectable $521 million worldwide — but in the context of MCU history, that number tells a complicated story.

The Numbers in Context

A $521 million worldwide gross is, by any normal standard, a successful theatrical run. But the MCU does not operate by normal standards. For comparison, Avengers: Endgame earned $2.8 billion, Spider-Man: No Way Home crossed $1.9 billion, and even Eternals managed $402 million. When you factor in the massive production and marketing budget — estimated at over $250 million before marketing — the profit margins narrow considerably.

The film opened to approximately $123.5 million domestically, a solid debut. However, the drop-off in subsequent weekends was steeper than hoped, suggesting the film struggled to generate repeat viewings and word-of-mouth momentum.

Overtaken by Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary, the Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has earned over $600 million worldwide and is projected to reach $700 million. The film holds a 94% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been re-released in IMAX venues.

The contrast is stark: a beloved Marvel property with four A-list stars was outperformed by an original sci-fi film based on a novel. It underscores the challenge Marvel faces in a post-Endgame landscape where brand recognition alone is no longer sufficient.

What This Means for Doomsday

The silver lining is that all four Fantastic Four cast members are confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. If Doomsday delivers on its test screening promise, it could retroactively boost interest in First Steps as audiences catch up on the characters.

Collector's Corner

Fantastic Four trading cards present an interesting value proposition right now. The initial hype has cooled, which means card prices have come down from pre-release peaks. For patient collectors, this dip represents a buying opportunity.

For researching card values and finding deals, TCGPlayer is a marketplace worth bookmarking. Their Marvel section has been growing, and the competitive marketplace format often produces better prices than eBay. Combine that with Card Ladder for price trend analysis.

Hot Cards to Watch: Pedro Pascal/Mr. Fantastic cards from Topps Marvel Chrome (buy the dip), Vanessa Kirby/Invisible Woman inserts, and any Fantastic Four team cards that could see renewed demand as Doomsday marketing ramps up.
