The Avengers Expand
Avengers: Age of Ultron was the most ambitious MCU film to date when it released — a $365 million production that juggled the original six Avengers while introducing Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision, and the titular villain Ultron. While it didn't quite match the original's cultural impact, it grossed $1.4 billion and set up the MCU's future in crucial ways.
The Legacy
- Introduced Scarlet Witch — Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff became one of the MCU's most powerful and complex characters
- Created Vision — Paul Bettany's android hero became central to WandaVision
- Set Up Civil War — The Sokovia Accords and Tony/Steve tension directly led to the next Captain America film
- The Hulkbuster Fight — Iron Man vs. Hulk remains one of the MCU's most spectacular action sequences
- Quicksilver's Sacrifice — Aaron Taylor-Johnson's only MCU appearance made it memorable
Fun Facts
- James Spader performed all of Ultron's scenes on set in a motion capture suit
- The Hulkbuster sequence took over a year to complete in post-production
- The party scene where everyone tries to lift Thor's hammer was largely improvised
- Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson developed their own twin language
Viewing Context
Avengers: Age of Ultron is the eleventh MCU film and the fifth entry in Phase 2. The post-credits scene shows Thanos putting on the Infinity Gauntlet, directly setting up the Infinity War storyline.
