Marvel's Biggest Gamble
In 2014, Marvel Studios did something insane: they made a $170 million movie starring a talking raccoon and a tree that only says three words. Nobody outside of hardcore comic fans had heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The result? A $773 million worldwide hit, a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, and one of the most beloved film franchises of the decade.
James Gunn's irreverent humor, the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack, and genuine emotional depth turned these D-list comic characters into A-list movie stars.
The Legacy
- Proved Marvel Could Do Anything — If a talking raccoon can gross $773M, the MCU has no limits
- The Awesome Mix — The soundtrack hit #1 on Billboard, the first film soundtrack of all cassette-era songs to do so
- Launched Chris Pratt — Transformed him from a sitcom actor into one of Hollywood's biggest stars
- Expanded the MCU Cosmic — Opened the door for cosmic stories that led to Infinity War
- "We Are Groot" — One of the most emotional moments in MCU history
Fun Facts
- The Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack sold over 2 million copies, making it the best-selling soundtrack of 2014
- Vin Diesel recorded "I am Groot" in over 15 languages for international releases
- Dave Bautista cried when he got the role of Drax — he'd been struggling to transition from wrestling to acting
- The dancing baby Groot post-credits scene was animated by James Gunn himself
- Chris Pratt was not the studio's first choice — they wanted bigger names, but Gunn insisted on Pratt
Viewing Context
Guardians of the Galaxy is the tenth MCU film and the fourth entry in Phase 2. It's largely standalone but connects to the larger MCU through the Power Stone (an Infinity Stone) and Thanos, who appears as Gamora and Nebula's adoptive father. The Collector from Thor: The Dark World's post-credits scene also appears.
