Overview
Luke Cage Season 1 follows the bulletproof hero as he steps out of the shadows in Harlem, taking on a corrupt political system and dangerous criminals while becoming a reluctant symbol of hope for his community.
Top Stars
Sweet Christmas: Harlem's Hero
Luke Cage was a cultural event. Premiering in September 2016, it was the first Marvel property with a Black lead since Blade, and it embraced that responsibility fully. The show was unapologetically Black — from its hip-hop soundtrack to its Harlem setting to its exploration of Black masculinity, community, and power.
Cottonmouth: Marvel's Most Tragic Villain
Mahershala Ali's Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes is a masterclass in villain acting. A man who wanted to be a musician but was forced into crime by family obligation, Cottonmouth brought Shakespearean tragedy to the streets of Harlem. Ali would go on to win two Oscars and be cast as Blade — but many fans still consider Cottonmouth his finest Marvel work.
The Hoodie as Symbol
In the wake of Trayvon Martin's death, Luke Cage's bulletproof hoodie became a powerful cultural symbol. The show deliberately addressed this, making the image of a Black man in a hoodie who couldn't be shot a statement about race in America. It was superhero storytelling at its most politically relevant.
