The MCU's Most Underrated Sequel?
Thor: The Dark World is often cited as one of the weaker MCU entries, but it's far more important to the franchise than its reputation suggests. It introduced the Reality Stone (one of six Infinity Stones), gave us some of the best Loki scenes in the entire MCU, and set up plot threads that paid off years later in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
The Legacy
- Introduced the Reality Stone — The Aether became crucial to the Infinity Saga's endgame
- Peak Loki — Tom Hiddleston's performance here is considered some of his best MCU work
- The Convergence — The dimensional portal concept returned in major ways in later films
- Loki's "Death" — The fake death scene became a defining Loki moment
- Set Up Infinity War — The post-credits scene with The Collector directly connected to Thanos's quest
Fun Facts
- The original director Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) left the project due to creative differences
- Tom Hiddleston's scenes were expanded significantly after test audiences responded so positively to Loki
- The Greenwich battle sequence was filmed on location in London
- Chris Hemsworth has said this is his least favorite Thor film, which influenced the comedic direction of Ragnarok
- The Aether/Reality Stone was the second Infinity Stone revealed in the MCU (after the Tesseract/Space Stone)
Viewing Context
Thor: The Dark World is the eighth MCU film and the second entry in Phase 2. It takes place after The Avengers and before Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The post-credits scene connects directly to Guardians of the Galaxy through The Collector.

Thor: The Dark World Cards — Hidden Gems in the MCU
Despite being one of the lower-rated MCU films critically, Thor: The Dark World (2013) introduced the Reality Stone (the Aether) and featured some of the MCU's most memorable Loki moments. For card collectors, this film's sets offer surprisingly good value.
Key Sets
The 2013 Upper Deck Thor: The Dark World set features autographs from the returning cast plus newcomers like Christopher Eccleston. Tom Hiddleston's expanded Loki role in this film makes his autograph cards from this set particularly desirable.
Market Trends
Loki cards from The Dark World era are sleeper picks — the character's popularity continued to grow after this film, but cards from this specific set remain more affordable than later Loki appearances. Chris Hemsworth autographs maintain strong value regardless of the film's reception.
